Great article! This is a principle I've learned along the way- we've been through many curriculums and methods during the last 8 years.

From a Well-Trained Mind, to a Thomas Jefferson Education, and 'unschooling', the 'best' method is what works for your family, and it often changes as you and your children grow.

Developing a philosophy based on your values, child's needs and personal capabilities is essential.

There are folks who try to reproduce the schoolroom and are frustrated and there are others who "un-school" their children and have well-adjusted and well-educated children. It should not be a system, but a rhythm...The biggest thing is this - base it on your child/ren, your family value system and on your abilities.

Our family uses an approach that has been dubbed "The Charlotte Mason Method." This engages the mind, is parent directed (not driven) and is interactive (child and parent are working together). This method gets us outside in the fresh air, we can enjoy the culture of the area and is not "school-in-a-box."

Any other ideas?
